GoRecess Studio Spotlight: Source Yoga Center; Fishers, IN
Owner: Janie Gunn
Classes offered: Source Yoga Center offers a variety of classes, with a focus on alignment and accessibility: Basics - for those newer to yoga or who want to stay with the fundamentals; Basics Plus - for those who want to expand their practice with more challenging poses; and Vinyasa - a faster-paced flow style for those with experience practicing yoga. Individual private yoga lessons are also offered.
What is Source's special sauce? We are unique for several reasons. If you can walk up the stairs to our space which offers big windows that overlook the Town Center green space then you CAN do yoga. Older clients appreciate that they can have their needs met with our numerous basics classes. One of our older teachers, Barb Manley R.N. and holistic educator for 20 years, assisted Deepak Chopra with the opening of his center in California and shares the lessons she has learned and taught from his Creating Health classes. Several of our teachers, myself included have over 1000 hours of teacher training in an alignment-focused style of yoga that builds strength and flexibility in balance. We create an intention for the practice and then weave that theme throughout the class so that you feel empowered on all levels; physically, emotionally and spiritually. The atmosphere promotes the true meaning of the practice of yoga - integration with your spirit. Lastly, we focus on the students by offering adjustments while they practice to help them achieve optimal alignment.
Advice to first time class-goers? Come with an open mind and heart to the practice. Bring a mat if you have one, or borrow one of ours. Wear comfy stretchy clothing that you would wear to a gym. Try our free Intro to Yoga class the second Saturday of the month from 1-2 p.m. as an added class or a first time class.
Favorite things to do in Fishers? Check out several local parks - Fort Benjamin Harrison is one of my favorites. Conner Prairie offers great outdoor events and symphony concerts as well as offering many outdoor educational events in their old village modeled after the first town built in this area. The Fishers Farmers Market is located right across the street in the Town Center, where they have recently opened an amphitheater which will highlight local bands. During the Indianapolis state fair you can ride the fair train which also operates out of the town center. This is now known as the Nickel Plate district and plans for continuing to expand into a community gathering center are being completed with new shops and more being added to complement an already vibrant area. What is great is that this area is geared towards becoming a walk-able community as well.
What's unique about Source Yoga's staff? Eric Bryant leads an eco yoga adventure in Belize which owner Janie and teacher Lauren attended last March. Highlights included daily yoga (of course) in outdoor palapas and amazing adventures - cave spelunking, horseback riding, and my favorite, an excursion to a private island where we snorkeled in the world's second largest barrier reef. I was thrilled to be Jane of the Jungle for the first few days but totally delighted to be island girl for the last days. Owner Janie was grateful to be a teacher at the first Indiana Yoga Conference, recently held downtown.
