GoRecess Studio Spotlight: Lyons Den Power Yoga; New York, NY
- By Caroline Callahan Janson
You may have spotted Lyons Den Power Yoga's co-founder Bethany Lyons on the pages of SELF, SHAPE, or Fitness magazines, or caught one of her appearances on ABC, CBS, TLC or CNN, to name a mere few. But in case not, it’s time to hightail it to this immaculate sun-lit TriBeCa studio, where Lyons teaches many of the classes at New York’s first hot Baron-Baptiste style studio in New York City. The studio’s mantra is "Be Bold. Be Generous. Be Courageous." And the classes feel as empowering as these three short imperatives.
Owners: Bethany Lyons and John Murray
Classes Offered: Hot Power Yoga including Power Basics, Power Flow, Power Beats and Power Ease. All classes are done in 90-100 degree heat.
Backstory: Both founders carry impressive resumés under their yogi toes. Founder John Murray once ran Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes in West Hollywood, as well as treasured restos like BlueFin and Dos Caminos. Murray’s service background shows through in the studio’s pristine design and cleanliness. And Bethany Lyons, an impressive yoga instructor in her own right, was one of the original teachers at SoulCycle and travelled the world working as a Master Trainer for Madonna’s gym, Hard Candy Fitness.
Why You Should Check It Out: Because it’s the first Baron Baptiste-style studio in the city, blending heat with the form of yoga founded in the 1940’s by Walt Baptiste and carried forth by his son Baron. This particular practice aims to inspire and empower its practitioners through its rigorous, athletic style that strengthens body and mind alike. Lyon’s Den is also one of the cleanest, most well-kept studios in New York.
What Makes It Such an Effective Workout? It’s a divine combination of heat and asanas, with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular health. The heat puts muscles at ease, allowing you to get into the postures more easily.
Amenities: Shower, retail, mat and towel rental, lockers, water and juices for purchase
Know Before You Go: Come well-hydrated. While Lyon’s Den doesn’t feel as hot as the many Bikram studios, it is definitely warm—around 90 to 100 degrees to be specific—so you will sweat. An extra liter or so of water will go a long way! It’s also recommended that you don’t eat for two hours before class.
Advice for first-timers: The third floor studio requires three stretches of stairs so leave time to spare!
