GoRecess Studio Spotlight: FitLAB Pilates; Cambridge, MA
Sarah Carr was teaching Pilates at the gym at MIT when one of her students, a professor, offered to help Sarah open her own studio. In 2009, Sarah opened FitLAB Pilates, a fully equipped pilates studio in Cambridge, MA that strives to bring science-based exercise methodology to its clients while also providing a fun workout, with lots of variety.
“I opened FitLAB Pilates in July 2009 to create a place where clients could feel comfortable while they work toward their goals," says Carr.
FitLAB Pilates offers pilates mat and equipment training for individuals and groups, personal fitness training for individuals and small groups, in addition to other services like Postural Analysis and Home Program Design.
Why you should check it out: The knowledge that you will gain from Pilates at FitLAB can be applied to any sport or other physical activity and bring new body awareness to the movements of your daily life. The specializations of the FitLAB instructors include post-rehab exercise, pilates for pain relief, and flexibility training.

Know before you go: Sign up before you go. Group classes are limited to five participants so they fill up quickly.
There is plenty of street parking available and there is a City of Cambridge parking lot nearby. There are a few buses that stop within a block of the studio and the nearest T stops are Central Square (15 minutes walking) and Harvard Square (20 minutes walking).
Advice for first-timers: If you are new to Pilates, begin with the New Client Intro, a 55-minute 1-on-1 session. During the Intro, your instructor will conduct a postural assessment to identify any major imbalances in your body, and then take you through Stott Pilates basic principles, as well as some mat, reformer, and tower exercises.
