GoRecess Studio Spotlight: Vélo-City; Boston, MA
Vélo-City's four founders are former college athletes (including one US Marine) with shared passions for the low-impact, 800-1,000-calorie burn of indoor cycling. Intimidated going to many female-dominated spin classes, they opened Vélo-City in Fall 2013 with a goal of delivering a fun and effective workout in a non-competitive, non-intimidating environment that caters to men and women alike.
Location: Boston, MA
Owners: Thomas Resor, Nick Resor, Allen Potts and Joe Pearce
What makes it unique? Vélo offers free shoes, towels and water to all customers, and also offers discounts to teachers, active duty military, cops, and firefighters. The studio also has special black lights that bring out brights colors and give people the option to ride in the dark and light up during certain songs, creating a unique vibe.
Owners' Advice for First-Timers: The hardest part is just showing up, but as soon as you enter the studio you leave behind the other stresses in life for a fun 45-minute experience. As long as you come wearing fitness clothes and fill up your water bottle, you just have to watch the instructor and they will lead your through a great workout. Just worry about yourself, instead of trying to compete with others.
Know Before You Go: In addition to free shoes, towels and water, cubbies, lockers, changing rooms, apparel and Vita Coco are available. Vélo's bikes' pedals work with all types of cycling shoes so you can bring your own or wear theirs for free. The Vélo-City entrance is through the green door, in Public Alley 442 off of Fairfield Street between Boylston Street and Newbury Street.
Whats hot on their playlist: Anything from Avicii's top hits to Top 40 and old school remixes, Vélo-City likes to mix things up so don't expect too many repeats here!
